Who Are We?
Weymouth Canoe Lifeguards are a voluntary unit of highly
motivated individuals from all backgrounds and ages.
History
The unit was formed in 1968
by a group of keen paddlers based at Weymouth's Youth Activity Centre (YAC) -
now the Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre (WOEC).
The unit provides safety cover for events all over the country and patrols Weymouth
beach throughout the busy summer period. The members regularly train to maintain a high
standard in disciplines such as first aid, swimming, and canoe skills.
Unity
Benefits to the community is additionally high, thanks
to such training schemes as Heart Start and the Weymouth Rookie Lifeguards, all of which
are open to the public and run soley by unit members.
The unit's National Championship success is a testiment to the time and effort put in by every
one of its members.
Rescue Kayaks, paddles and other safety equipment necessary for waterborne rescues are very
expensive, a full set of lifeguarding kit amounts to around £1000.
The Future
Membership of the unit has risen steadily in recent years and presently
stands at over 80 people. Members age from between 10 and 60 years old.
The Rookie Lifeguards boasts 30 members and a waiting list into double figures.
The unit is currently seeking to develop a new base. The present hut
measures just 4m by 2.5m, serves as an equipment store, changing room,
training room, and Obs Point.
The unit is working hard to raise the £100,000 needed to build a new HQ.
